Reflecting

Chase your goal and don’t give up…

If you have a big goal for yourself- I want to encourage you to pursue it. Don’t be afraid to chase what it is you really want because only you know what that really is.

I have always wanted to be a psychologist – even before I really knew what it was, it was just there in my head somehow, so right at the start of my teaching career I told a senior colleague that teaching would only be a temporary step on my journey. I remember the wry smile on her face as she said that my dream to study psychology would surely disappear as ‘real life’ would get in the way and it would be too difficult from that point to balance studying, work and family life. I remember that moment well because even as she was speaking – I just knew she was wrong. I was 22 years old and didn’t know much about most of the things I know now, but I knew what I wanted and that I could and would pursue my goal.

It took a few years and going back to studying and exams when Lucy was a baby and I was working full time was hard – but I did it because I knew what I wanted and was determined to achieve it. Now I am studying toward my Masters degree and still balancing family, study and work and I wouldn’t want it any other way. ‘Real life’ hasn’t gotten in the way of my goal because this is my real life.

When I am at work, I remember that I want to be a psychologist to help students overcome the barriers they face to their learning. When I am studying, I have moments where I suddenly understand education in a very different way and through a different lens. When I am at home with our girls I am satisfied to know that I am showing them, not just telling them, that whatever they dream of and whatever their goal is, if they work with commitment and determination they will reach it.

Today I want to encourage you to reflect on your own goals. If there is something you have always wanted to do – why not do it? Believe in yourself and your ability to meet your goals no matter how far away they might appear at times. Finally, don’t be put off by the time that it might take to get to your goal because one thing is for sure-the time will pass by whether you work towards your goal or not.
