It is easy to take our body for granted and focus on what we would love to change about it, but more fun to embrace it and focus on what you wouldn’t change for the world!
I had a difficult relationship with my body for a long time. For years and I literally mean years, I was convinced that I was too ugly and gross for words. The drive to try and change my body sapped my energy and was the background narrative of my life. I missed out on so much and wasted so much time. As I have grown older, I am delighted to have totally shifted my perspective. The older I get, the more I am in awe of my body and all it does for me.
My body incubated and grew two remarkable human beings which in itself is enough to marvel at. My legs have carried me through three half marathons and the epic 100 km over 25 hours that was Trailwalker. Whatever physical challenges I have faced, my body has always got me through. My arms have held my babies and allow me to hold hands and cuddle the people I love the most. My senses allow me to enjoy all that this beautiful world has to offer – the sights, the sounds, the smells and the tastes.
For my 40 before 40 challenge I am working on my flexibility and aiming to do the splits. During my stretch sessions, I decided to see if I can still do a bridge and a head stand and unbelievably I still can! Thirty years after I taught my body to do these things it did not let me down.
I try to remember every day to be grateful for my ability to breathe, to move, stretch and move my body and today, wherever you are at in your relationship with your body, I want to encourage you to do the same and reflect on how amazing your body actually is.
Never mind what it looks like, focus on what it does for you and be grateful for all of it.
